Banks Military

My Grandfather Joseph Storrow Banks had a great influence on my life passing on an interest in Photography and showing me his many other talents. In his attic at 26 Graham Street he had a radio workshop and in the cellar engineering equipment and of course his darkroom on the landing. 

He was also instrumental in getting me first into the Merchant Navy in 1965, I only lasted a year with horrendous sea sickness, and after leaving in April 1966 then he took me along to the RAF Recruiting office and got me signed up for 9 years in the RAF Regiment.

He spoke rarely of his Second World War service and it was his wife Winnifred who had told all the Grandchildren that whilst serving in Palestine in 1942 he had been shot in the leg  by a German or Italian sniper.  Needless to say on the arrival of his service record a month or so ago it turns out he was a dispatch rider probably overtaking a convoy when he was hit by one of the trucks and sent flying breaking his leg in two places. He spent several months in a hospital in South Africa before returning home at the end of 1942  and being discharged as unfit for service.

For the rest of his life he had one leg 2 inches shorter than the other and was continually supplied by the MOD with a built up boot.

Here you will find his military service record dated from around 1935 when he joined the Territorial Army, presumably hoping to carry out his other passion driving, until his discharge on his return home in December  1942.
