Miskelly Military

Quite a number of the Miskelly generations have served their King/Queen and country including myself. At the moment I am aware of several of which I am gathering information to include on the site. Two in Particular come to mind.

Alexander Lister ( 1900-1918) Alexander was the son of Isabel Lister(Miskelly) and the Grandson of James Montgomery and Elizabeth Miskelly. He joined up on his 18th birthday in 1918 but was one of many who died in those dreadful battlefields of the First World War having only been a soldier for a few months. His body is one of those never found and he is commemorated at VIS-EN-ARTOIS MEMORIAL  one of the First World War cemeteries near the area where he was killed.

John Miskelly(1907 -1940)  John Miskelly lived in Dumfries in Scotland and was a mechanic in the RAF Volunteer Reserve before the outbreak of war in 1939. On the  1st September 1939 he was recalled to full service and was sent down to Derbyshire to train as  a pilot in Tiger Moths.  Sadly his career as a pilot was short lived as during a flight in April 1940 his plane crashed and he died from his injuries on 15th April 1940. I applied for and received his service record which was a great help naming his wife and child.  John's remains were returned to Dumfries and he is buried there with his parents. His wife and daughter moved to Oxfordshire where they were joined by his brother and their descendants now live in the Bristol Area.

Albert Edward Miskelly(1923-1944) Albert was in the Royal Artillery arriving in Normandy shortly after the D Day landings. He fought with his regiment for a month before dying from his  wounds on the 6th July 1944 after his battery was Attacked  by German tanks near CAEN as they were withdrawing to a an area where they could be resupplied. He is buried in a small  CWGC cemetery near SECQUEVILLE-EN-BESSIN just west of CAEN.

There may yet be more who paid the supreme sacrifice and I will endeavor to find and name them.

As an ex military man myself, Royal Air Force Regiment 1966-1975, I have only admiration and pride for those who served their country.

Once again if anyone can supply me with any information I would be only too pleased to accept it. Please do not send original documents if you have them copies will be ok.

After I diiscovered Albert had been killed I made a decision to visit his grave and commision a report on his units activities during June/July 1942. The last 2 pages show those killed during the month and the highlights shown were members of Alberts gun crew who also died after the attack. The map shows the progress made by Alberts unit as it fought it's way towards Caen and then withdrew to re arm and rest.

Part of the report included the actual War Diary composed by his unit as it fought it's way towards Caen. The final page shows the time Alberts unit was attacked and it seemed only his gun was hit resulting in the death of his sergeant and 4 wounded including Albert.
